New layout + discography + distributors!
I went on a brief tour earlier this year and, perhaps unsurprisingly, all of my Toronto connections fell through. So, instead of merely bumming around Toronto for a few days, I met up w/David Payne (of Hamilton noise kings FOSSILS), who helped set up a show in the (shall we say) much smaller locale of Brantford, ON.
It was a Friday night at Brantford’s, um, dance club, I guess? Likely goes without saying, but nobody knew what to make of any of us. You should really check out this video of Fossils’ set - less than thirty seconds in, somebody yells “SHUT THAT SHIT OFF! NOBODY CARES! FUCK!!”
So, this right here is roughly half of the shortest set I’ve ever performed in front of people, although I usually tell people this show was more “performing to alcoholism”…
Recorded to a shitty little handheld cassette recorder on May 30th, 2013.
FW (SBM008) captures the first meeting between the Friesen/Waters Duo: guitarist Devin Friesen (of Bitter Fictions) and saxophonist Nate Waters (of the Cable-Knits and Hunter-Gatherer, here on alto sax). Recorded live in the Library Basement, FW presents a set of spontaneous compositions which belie their improvised roots—rather than free jazz aplomb, the Friesen/Waters duo operates with restraint, largely opting to carve integrative feedback drones from which either instrument can emerge. A spacious set of measured improvisation rich with intuitive feeling from both players, poised somewhere between ambient music, noise rock, and free jazz.
Pro-dubbed + ink screened tapes coming out soon, limited to 50 copies on Shaking Box Music.
Journeying & The Returns is the newest solo guitar outing from Canadian writer Devin Friesen’s Bitter Fictions: two sides of a guitar improvisation recorded in the Library Basement in May 2013. This lathe-cut 10” finds Friesen engaging in more fingerpicked melodicism than on Bitter Fictions’ LP from earlier this year, but still with the requisite heavy walls of buzzing feedback drone and shoegaze returns. “Journeying” opens with bouncing notes before getting lost in walls of fuzz, while “The Returns” bristles with smeared feedback before parting into descending note runs, all topped with bent chords and wistful shoegaze wrapping. Both tracks are from the same session (only a fade at the end of side A separates them), but with a light symmetry evoking the sensations of “Journeying” and “The Returns”: getting lost before coming back, and the inherent longings found in both.
Clear 10” lathe-cut records w/full colour artwork. Includes 8-page booklet w/translucent vellum covers.

Our friends over at Unit Structure Sound Recordings have just added a bunch of new releases to their distro, including the newest Shaking Box releases from Pale Lobo and Bitter Fictions. There are plenty of interesting labels stocked (e.g., NNA, Digitalis, Sic Sic, DDP, Orange Milk, Los Discos Enfantasmes), so take a gander and stock up!
In other news, I’ve sent the label artwork off for an upcoming Bitter Fictions 10” lathe. These will be strictly limited to 25 copies and should be out later this year.
SBM007: Pitch Dark by D.F. OUT NOW
PITCH DARK – two sides of tape decay & drone rot, the former a sax-addled murk w/the fog of unease seeping overhead; the latter a depression fallout, wayward gtr vision stretched across industrial starlight…

very few cassettes made, i.e. less than twenty…
Improvisation recorded in June 2013, about a week before the crazy flooding that forced much of downtown/inner Calgary to be evacuated (and for Sled Island, the one week of the year where Calgary isn’t a depressing shithole, to be cancelled). Was planning to hold onto these for future release, but the mood conjured within was too close to my own to not share with others this week. Stay safe, friends.

- SBM006: Pale Lobo - Hands Down
- /50 on dark blue cassettes w/white printing
Pale Lobo is the solo project of Andrew Hume. He hits things in Seizure Salad and Burro, and also makes synthesizer jams in Dada Centauri. Hands Down is a freaky swamp of chewn-apart tapes and headphone gargle, a bubbling excursion through waves of synthesized ooze. When yr head surfaces, the smell is still there: mutant, rolling, and strung from the trees, clinging like the eye that may or may not be looming over yr shoulder…
